Brían Baguck Wescott, a freelance film producer, was born and raised in Alaska where he is an enrolled member of the Athabascan and Yup'ik nations. He began as a researcher for the Kevin Costner documentary series 500 Nations for CBS and has gone on to the world of feature films. Early credits include: technical advisor on the Warner Brothers film On Deadly Ground (shot in Alaska); casting associate/talent coordinator on the two-part HBO movie Grand Avenue; director's assistant on the Universal feature Dante's Peak; and assistant to David Duchovny on The X-Files feature and television series. Though a number of these have been Native American-themed, he has equally enjoyed working on action films and supernatural thrillers.
He recently crossed above the line as a producer of features and documentaries. Christmas in the Clouds, a full-length 35mm feature he co-produced and acted in, will open in theaters in the fall of 2005 and is the first romantic comedy set among Native Americans. Other features are in the packaging stage of development. Back home, he wrote and hosted "Cancer in the Great Land," the first of a series of educational films for the Alaska Native Health Board. And he recently signed on as a co-producer for a major documentary series Indian Country: Native Americans in the 20th Century, with Chris Eyre on board as director.
Among other interests, Mr. Wescott is deeply committed to the adventure of Native peoples in the modern world. To this end he has served as a consultant to the Ford Foundation (Media, Arts, and Culture portfolio), trustee of First Americans in the Arts (six years), grant panelist for Native American Public Telecommunications, playwriting coach for the Autry National Center (Young Native Playwrights’ lab), and mentor in the Fox Broadcasting Young Native Filmmakers Lab. He holds a BA from Harvard College and a Ph.D from Yale University and continually encourages young people to pursue their education.
